Roy Moravitz

August 15, 1961 — February 22, 2025

Weslaco- Roy E. Moravitz, a cherished member of the agricultural community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Weslaco, Texas, on February 22, 2025, at the age of 63. He was born on August 15, 1961, in Mercedes, Texas, to Lawrence and Janette Moravitz. Roy graduated from Weslaco High School, where he played football for the Panthers.

After high school, Roy and his cousin founded Moravitz Roofing and Construction. His strong work ethic and dedication often found him on rooftops, tarring alongside his crew. During this time, he earned the nickname “Tar Baby,” which stuck with him long after he transitioned into a different career. Though his path led him elsewhere, the nickname remained a cherished part of his identity, and he was warmly known as “Tar Baby” by friends, family, and neighbors throughout the community.

Tar Baby dedicated over 35 years of his life as a Supervisor at A&W Produce, where his hard work, leadership, and commitment to agriculture left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the industry. Known for his strong work ethic and deep knowledge of the field, he earned the respect and admiration of those privileged to work alongside him.

Roy was a man of remarkable character, known for his unwavering work ethic, generous heart, and infectious sense of humor. His presence comforted those around him, offering strength and kindness in equal measure. A trusted confidant and a source of joy, he had a unique ability to lift spirits and brighten even the darkest days. His warmth, resilience, good-natured mischief-maker, and compassion made him truly unforgettable.

Roy's love for life went far beyond his work. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—savoring his signature wintergreen Skoal, perfecting his famous bean recipe, or indulging in a comforting bowl of chicken and dumplings. His deep blue eyes sparkled with warmth, reflecting his passion for good food, laughter, and the love he shared with family and friends.

An avid outdoorsman, Roy found his greatest joy in hunting and fishing, embracing the beauty of nature with every adventure. His passion for Texas Longhorn football was unmatched, and his spirited support was well-known among family and friends. A proud and faithful Christian, he lived his beliefs wholeheartedly, guiding his life with faith and integrity. The Christmas season held a special place in his heart, and his extravagant holiday light display became a beloved tradition, bringing joy to all who eagerly awaited its annual glow.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Janette Moravitz. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Jessica Quesada (Aldo), CJ Moravitz (Alex), David Moravitz, and Jennifer DeLeon (Mike); his grandchildren, Reygan, Riggs, Phoenyx, Mia, and Andre; his sister, Tina Truitt; and his nephews, Michael Free, Mitchell Pitts, and Mason Pitts.

To honor Roy's remarkable life, a Visitation will be held on March 1, 2025, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM, with a Celebration of Life at 2 PM at McCaleb Funeral Home. Family, friends, and all touched by his kindness are invited to pay their respects and share fond memories of Roy.
