Weslaco- Salome P Garza, 94, passed away at her daughters home on Monday, April 6th, 2020. She was born on July 26, 1925 to Santos Piña and Epifana Rios Piña.
Salome and her seven siblings grew up in Weslaco. She met her future husband, Jose Garza, as a teenager. They were married in 1943 and raised ten children of their own. Jose began a career at Continental Can Company, which afforded Salome to be home to rear all ten of her children.
Although Salome had a limited, formal education, she was very bright and taught herself most of what she knew. She was also an avid reader, so she learned a lot through her hobby.
Salome loved working in her garden. God gave her a green thumb, and she had the yard to prove it. Everything Salome touched seemed to bloom into a beautiful flower or plant.
She was also very nurturing and a great homemaker. Salome became an expert at cooking for a large group of people. Her breakfast was a must, and the children, grandchildren, and friends loved to pile in her dining room and enjoy the delicious food and conversation. Thanksgiving was always at mom’s, and she did all the cooking. Everyone will miss her oatmeal cookies and the warm and sweet scent that reminds us of love.
Salome will always be remembered by her strength, courage, dedication, and love.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Santos and Epifaña Piña, loving husband Jose Garza, sons, Jose Jr., David, Neto, and Art Garza, great-grandson, Jonathan Diaz, siblings, Ezequio Piña (Delia), Santos Piña (Mirta), Jose Piña (Andrea), Reyes Rodriguez (Lorenzo), and Angela Villarreal (Jesus).
