Weslaco - Santiaga "Chaga" Bustos, 78, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018. She was born on February 11, 1940 in Weslaco, Texas to Domingo and Dora Bustos. Santiaga was raised in Weslaco with her two sisters, Catarina and Ramona. Santiaga's parents were very strong in their Catholic faith and sent the girls to St. Joan Catholic Church in Weslaco during grade school. Education was very important in the Bustos family and Santiaga graduated from Weslaco High School and then went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from Pan American University. Santiaga was a single mom and worked very hard to raise her four children, Melissa, Cynthia, Marco, and Sandra. Many will remember Chaga from her many years working as a teacher. She taught in Weslaco, PSJA, Donna, Progreso and Edcouch-Elsa ISD. She was a great teacher and enjoyed her career, retiring only eleven years ago. Santiaga had a strong Catholic faith and attended mass regularly, volunteering often. She played the organ for many years. She loved working in her garden and had a natural green thumb. Chaga was also very naturally artistic and took art lessons after her retirement. She loved to write poems and relate them to some of her paintings. Chaga also loved to gamble, taking many trips to Las Vegas and Louisiana with her children and grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren and was always available to help her children raise them. Santiaga is preceded in death by her parents, Domingo and Dora Bustos and her sister, Ramona Luna. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Limon of Weslaco, Melissa Martinez (Lionel) of Weslaco, and Sandra Zavala of Alamo, son, Marco Antonio Reyes (Dolores) of Weslaco, grandchildren, James Dillon Martinez (Margarita Alaniz), Cody Matthew Martinez (Jasmine Vega), Mia Soleil, Dora Felicia, and Gian Karlo Zavala, Isidro "EZ"and Lizette Limon, Crystahl Trevino, Roxanne Hernandez, and Sabrina Martinez, great-grandchildren, Alexa and Marc Daniel Munoz, sister Catarina Misfeldt, and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 23rd, from 9am-9pm, with a rosary at 7pm. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 24th, 10 am, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco with burial to follow at Highland Memorial Park.
