Weslaco- Santiago Guerra Zavala Sr., 79, went to his final resting place October 1, 2015 at his residence with his loving wife Blanca, by his side.
He was born on February 18, 1936 to Manuel B Zavala Sr. and Rosa Guerra Zavala in Taft, Texas. Santiago came from a family of work ethic and began working at an early age. He met Blanca at a dance. Although they were only 18, they fell in love at first sight. They eloped 8 days later, October 21st, 1951 and made a beautiful life for themselves and their six children.
They moved to Weslaco in 1955 and Blanca recalls that Santiago worked in the agricultural industry, she encouraged him to go into carpentry to provide a better life for their family and that is what he did, behind every good man is a good woman. She knew what he was capable of and she encouraged him along the way. Although he only had a fourth grade education, he learned everything and anything he could about carpentry and became a master at it. He also was able to make a nice living supporting six children and taking them on many trips always encouraging them to learn more. He built their home in 1967 and then he built many homes for others along with any type of construction that can be imagined.
Santiago had a few hobbies along with his carpentry, one very important one, like most Texans, he loved the Cowboys. He also loved watching old westerns, that was his favorite past time.
Santiago is survived by his loving spouse of nearly 60 years, Blanca, Three Daughters, Gloria Z Howell (Cristobal) of Lake Jackson, TX , Esmeralda Z Hernandez (Francisco) of Alma, GA and Veronica Z Dominguez of Weslaco, TX, Three Sons, Santiago Zavala, Jr.(Isabel) of Weslaco, TX, Ventura Zavala (Ludim)of Weslaco, Atanacio Zavala (Sandra) of Weslaco, Brother, Guadalupe Zavala, Sr. , 18 grandchildren, Jonathan, Eric, Christopher, Rosario, Louana, Fabian, Francisco Jr., Santiago III, Jennifer, Stephanie, Jessica, Ashley, Loriana, Lilia, Cristina, Crystal, Clarisa, Pascual Jr., 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
