Weslaco: Socorro Marrero Bell, 70, passed away at her home on January 20, 2021, after a brief cancer battle. She was born on July 27, 1950, to Felipe Marrero Sr. and Alicia Vargas Marrero in Bronx, New York. Socorro attended UCLA, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Socorro was working in a clinic when Dr. William Bell where Socorro happened to be working as a nurse. They were an instant match.
Dr. William Bell and Socorro were married on November 6, 1981, and spent the rest of their lives together. They often traveled for his job but eventually settled in Weslaco. Socorro was brilliant but was fortunate enough to take care of the home and kids. She was very involved with her church, St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Socorro taught CCD and contributed by serving on various committees and helped with retreats.
Socorro will be remembered for her fun, outgoing personality. Socorro loved Christmas parties, Thanksgiving celebrations, birthdays. She was generous and loving. Socorro was a great caregiver and took care of her elderly mother for most of her life.
Socorro loved a good time, eating sushi, traveling, and spending time at the beach. Socorro was also a very talented artist and loved to paint. She had excellent taste and could spot a good piece of art.
Socorro is preceded in death by her parents, Felipe and Alicia Marrero and loving husband, Dr. Anthony William Bell, and brother, Felipe Marrero Jr. She is survived by her son, Anthony Gonzalez (Sarah) of Jarell, Texas, daughter Natalie Bell of Tampa Florida, brother Juan Marrero and best friend, Raquel Guillet.
Visitation will be Friday 2-9 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 pm. Mass will be Saturday, January 23, at 2 pm, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco.
