Socorro Garza

Weslaco- Socorro Garza, 70, passed away on Tuesday, December 26th, 2017 at Retama Manor in Weslaco. He was born on June 2nd, 1947 to Bruno and Elvira Garza. He grew up in Weslaco and worked as a migrant going to California for a couple of seasons, where he would meet his future wife, Maria Elena Mercado in 1968. They were married shortly after and enjoyed 37 years together. They raised their family in Weslaco where Socorro was a supervisor for several farms. He worked for Pioneer, Texas A&M Experimental Station, Mitchell Farms and others, but he spent the most time at Mitchell Farms. His passion was tending to his wife's plants and rose bushes, and caring for his property, and growing and selling oak, palm and olive trees. He took great pride in his landscaping, loved music, and had a hand for cooking and baking. He especially enjoyed spending time with his brother in his shop visiting and hanging out and being outdoors. Socorro and Maria took the children to the beach when they were able to, but he is most remembered by his strong work ethic. He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Maria Elena, his daughter, Noelia Garza, his sisters Guadalupe Casas, and Adelia Garza, and niece Norma Linda Casas. Socorro is survived by his children, Daniel Garza (Analicia) of Weslaco, Randy J. Garza (Lisa) of Harlingen, Maria Garza of San Antonio, Mauricio Garza of Austin, Patricia Garza of Austin, brother Ernesto Garza (Leticia) of Weslaco, nephew Justin Garza, 2 nieces Mary Lou Casas, and Brenda Garza, and 5 grandchildren Danielle, Brandon, James, Claudette, and Leon, 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins and friends. Visitation will be held at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, December 29th, from 10 am- 9 pm, with a rosary at 7pm.
