Sybil Archer

May 31, 1915 — September 11, 2015

Edcouch/Austin: Sybil Eleanor Archer died September 11, 2015, with her family by her side in Austin, Texas. Sybil was 100 years young when she passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord.

Sybil Eleanor Cellum was born May 31, 1915 in Charleston, TX, to Erastus Woodrow and Carrie Clyde (French) Cellum.

She attended Charleston Schools in Charleston, TX and moved to Edcouch in 1933 at the age of 18. Sybil met and married the love of her life, Fred Alton Archer, whom she met outside a family drug store in Elsa. They enjoyed endless adventure and joyous memories for 63 years.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and worked tirelessly to support any group or organization that needed help. Her interests included family, cooking, sewing, fishing, sports, playing bridge, and dancing. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, including numerous nieces, nephews, siblings, siblings of Alton, and children of family friends. One of her greatest joys and pastimes was cooking up a storm for large family gatherings in her home in Elsa. Some of her signature dishes included chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes, enchiladas, and chocolate chip cookies. The door was always open for all with plenty of food for all. During football and basketball seasons she could always be found cheering on her beloved Cowboys, Longhorns, and Spurs.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Archer Rowald and granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Rowald of Austin; brother and his spouse, Billie and Hazel Cellum of Pharr; brother-in-law, Billy Jack Archer of Spring; multiple nephews and nieces; and care giver, Maria Norman of Austin.

She was preceded in death by her father, Erastus Woodruff Cellum; mother, Carrie Clyde Cellum; siblings James Myrl Cellum, Corris Connor Cellum, Gordon Oyce Cellum, Melba Clyde Fowler, Erastus Woodruff Cellum, Margaret Maxine Garrett; and husband, Fred Alton Archer.

Arrangements are with McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, Texas. Visitation is Friday, September 18, 4-8 PM. A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 19th at 11 AM at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco.

The pallbearers are as follows: Fred Nichols, Ricky Cellum, Tommy Cellum, Jack Harbison, Sean Odom and Doug Rowald.
