Victor Ruben Garza

July 24, 1929 — August 19, 2022

WESLACO – Victor Ruben Garza, 93, of Weslaco, passed away peacefully at home on August 19, 2022, of natural causes, surrounded by his loved ones. Victor was born on July 24, 1929, in Marin, NL, Mexico, to the family of Victor Ruben Garza and Josefa Martinez Garza. His family immigrated to Weslaco in the early 1930s and established a neighborhood grocery store, and were considered some of Weslaco's pioneers. He graduated from Weslaco High School and Durham Business College. Victor met his soulmate when they were both children and living in the same neighborhood. After many years and relentless determination, Elva let Victor take her on a date. Victor was united in marriage with Elva Olguin on January 27, 1952, and spent the rest of their lives in Weslaco. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year.

Victor was employed at Burton Auto Supply in Weslaco for 45 years. During his tenure, he served in the following capacities: purchasing manager, automotive sales manager, and Service Parts Warehouse manager. Victor became a minority stockholder of the company and developed an employee profit sharing plan which later merged into what is now Security 1st Federal Credit Union. Victor served many years on the board of Security 1st Federal Credit Union.

Victor embraced his community and felt it was his duty and right as a citizen. Victor was a charter member of the Weslaco Knights of Columbus, in which he participated for over 60 years. Victor's fellow Knights would kid him about being a Knight so long that he must have come on the same ship as Christopher Columbus. During 60 years of service, Victor earned numerous awards, led countless fundraisers, and held many positions. For example, he served as the financial secretary for over 30 years. Victor was also an active member of the Weslaco Lions Club, helping with fundraising and the annual musical.
Victor's efforts did not go unnoticed, and in 1996, he was awarded Outstanding Volunteer by the annual Weslaco Chamber of Commerce.

Victor and his wife, Elva, were faithful Catholics and attended mass as often as possible.
When Victor was not working or volunteering, both of which he loved, he enjoyed spending time with friends. They had a local coffee group that would meet at Jose's Cafecito. Most importantly, he adored his grandchildren and took his bride on lots of fun vacations.

Victor was very sociable, greeted everybody with a smile, and could brighten up any occasion with his optimistic personality. His philosophy was hard work pays off and very few things in life come easy. Victor is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Josefa Garza, his brother Humberto Garza (Viola), sisters Maria Cuellar (Ruben), Nora Perez, and brother Joel Garza.

Victor is survived by his loving wife Elva, his children, Victor Rene Garza (Viola), Leticia Anzaldua (Ed Rodriguez), brother-in-law Claudio Perez, sister-in-law Evangelina "Vangie" Hinojosa Garza. Grandchildren, Gina Fine (Jeff), Lisa Lopez (Sergio), Angela Anzaldua, and Aaron Anzaldua. Great-grandchildren, Andrew Garcia, Aden Bratley, Lauren Lopez, and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends and acquaintances at the McCaleb Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 24th, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a time for sharing memories at 7 pm. Graveside burial of ashes will take place on Thursday, August 25th, morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Weslaco City Cemetery. The family asks that in place of flowers, you may consider giving to your favorite charity.
