WESLACO / ROBSTOWN: Virginia (Jenny) Lee Polvado Ligon passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 22, 2023. Born in San Antonio, TX in 1941 to J.D. and Anna Bell Polvado. Virginia attended Somerset High School where she was head cheerleader, graduating in 1960. Her family settled in Weslaco, TX where she married and had two children, Janine and Jimmy. After living in San Diego, CA, San Antonio, and McAllen, she settled in Harlingen, TX where she was a homemaker, substitute teacher, and very active as a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Moving to Weslaco in the ’70s, Virginia was an avid horsewoman participating in various local shows, parades, and trail rides. She was Tip ‘O Tex Trail Queen one year and led the livestock show and rodeo parade. She also worked for her brother at Mid Valley Glass crafting custom picture frames. Virginia worked in the insurance business as well as being a beauty consultant for Merle Norman. When her mother required constant care, she moved in with her and took care of her until she passed several years later. During this time, she married Charles Wilson Ligon and helped run the iconic Weslaco landmark, The Bronco Restaurant. She also enjoyed selling items in her booth and working at a local antique store. Virginia and Charlie enjoyed many years together with family, and friends, traveling, dancing to their favorite music at Arturo’s, and going on their numerous camping trips to state parks. Upon retirement, she and Charlie moved up to the Calallen/Robstown area where they resided for the last years of their lives.
Aside from family, Virginia’s passions throughout her life were cooking, sewing, camping, gardening, and painting. She was a prolific artist and craftswoman of all mediums. Her paintings, crafts, and furniture grace many homes and countless lives. She loved nature and the outdoors and had one of the greenest thumbs around. Throughout her life, she enjoyed numerous family camping trips from the beach to the mountains. Virginia loved her entire family without question. Her life, what she meant to and taught her family is more than can be expressed in a few short paragraphs, but her passion, knowledge, skill, love for music, art and nature, she passed on to her children and grandchildren in a way that will last them a lifetime. She was a beautiful person, inside and out. Most of all, she was a loving mother and grandmother who took care of all of those around her, and gave her children and grandchildren all she had to offer.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Charles Wilson Ligon, parents J.D. and Anna Bell Polvado, brothers Willis and Darrell Polvado, and stepson Chuck Ligon.
Virginia is survived by her children Janine (Thom) Pruski of Calallen/Robstown TX and Jimmy (Lee Ann) Miller of Willow Park/Aledo TX, Shannon Ligon of Ashland City TN and Ashley Brouwer of Fairbanks AK; her grandchildren Meaghan Pruski Keesee, Lauren, Anna, and Evan Pruski, Conner and Sean Miller, Zach Ligon, Nicky, K.C., Mitch, and Jack Brouwer.
