William E. Locke

September 29, 1929 — November 13, 2022

William (Bill) E. Locke, M.D. transitioned to eternal life on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Dr. Locke
was born on September 29, 1929, in Batavia, NY, the son of Ethel Mann Locke and William E.
Locke, Jr. Bill grew up in New York and graduated as president of the senior class of Batavia High
School in 1947.

He obtained his B.S. degree from St. Lawrence University in 1951 and an M.D. from the University
of the State of New York Medical College at Syracuse in 1954. Dr. Locke finished an Internship at St.
Joseph Hospital in Syracuse in 1955 and a Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brooke Army
Hospital in 1960. Dr. Locke served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1955 to 1964 and was
honorably discharged as a Major. He had a private practice of Ob/Gyn in San Antonio, TX, from
1964 to 1992, after which he spent three years as a locum tenens in Obstetrics and Gynecology in
Texas, New York, Michigan, and Oklahoma. Dr. Locke also worked as Chief of Staff at Northeast
Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. Then, he and Betty moved to the Rio Grande Valley, and Dr. Locke
worked as a staff Obstetrician/Gynecologist at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, TX, until his
retirement in 1999.

Dr. Locke also made time for hobbies. He was an avid snow skier, tennis, and volleyball player. Dr.
Locke loved to sing and was active for many years in San Antonio’s Chordsmen Chorus and
Barbershop Harmony Society.

Dr. Locke was an active member of St. John's Chapel in Monterey, California, for many years.
He and his wife Betty were frequent travelers to many parts of the world, and from 1987 until 2015,
were avid motor homers who traveled throughout the U.S. From 2009-2015, they lived and traveled
full-time in their motorhome and often volunteered as "workampers" in state and county parks. From
2015-2019 they were residents of Salinas, CA. In 2019 they moved back to the Rio Grande Valley
and have been enjoying a leisurely life at John Knox Village Retirement Community.
Dr. Locke is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Sue Locke; Son, David Locke (Valerie); Daughter,
Lisa Locke (Douglas McCutcheon); Son, Stephen Locke (Christine Brown); Sister, Patricia Allen, Step-daughters Terri Sailors (Phil Gurvitz)
and Mary Frances "Sissy" Sailors ( Harry "Red" Conger); Grandchildren Tyler Locke, Marissa Locke,
Ryan Locke, Mallory Sampson, Austin Locke, and Amanda Locke. He was preceded in death by
Daughter-in-Law Sonia Locke and Son-in-Law David Chartier.

Dr. Locke's life will be celebrated on Sunday, November 20th, 3pm, at John Knox Village in Weslaco.
