MERCEDES — William “Ed” Edward Mooney, 65, of Prudenville, MI died Wednesday, December 31, 2014 in his winter home in Mercedes, TX. A memorial service will be scheduled for later this spring at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI.
William was born to Mary Jane and Henry Mooney on January 1, 1949 in Flint, MI. After graduating high school in Davison, MI, Ed joined the Marines and faithfully served his country in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart as well as many other awards. Upon his return from Vietnam, he met and married Patricia “Tish” (Timlick) Mooney also from Flint. After his military service he went on to have successful careers with the US Postal Service in Davison and as a Locksmith in Houghton Lake. He was also an avid sportsman and enjoyed his time hunting, trapping and fishing in northern Michigan’s great outdoors. Ed was the father of two children, Jason Mooney, 44, of Leonardtown, MD and Stacy Riddle, 40, of Colonial Heights, VA.
During Ed’s service in Vietnam he sustained life threatening injuries that affected him for the rest of his life. One such injury led to him receiving two kidney transplants. In 1992, his sister, Debra Vanover gave him his first transplant. His second transplant procedure took place in 2013 as part of a paired donor program where his daughter Stacy donated to a person she matched and Ed received a kidney from Matt Jefferson of Sterling, VA. Matt wasn’t known to Mr. Mooney before the surgery, he has become a good friend to Ed and his family since that day. The Mooney family will be eternally grateful for Debra, Stacy and Matt’s life changing gifts.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Henry Mooney, his step father, Morton Robinson and his brother, Mark Mooney. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Tish, his mother, Mary, his two children, Jason and Stacy, his sisters Debra Vanover and Linda Grenfell, his grandchildren Zachery, Shannon, Grace and Rachel and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends.
In the US there are more than 122,000 people that currently await a lifesaving organ transplants.
