Weslaco: Yolanda Torres, 54, passed away at her home on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022. Yolanda was born in Bartow, Florida to Higinio Sr. and Rebecca (Cisneros) Pecina. Yolanda grew up in Wimauma, Florida. She met her soulmate, Juventino, when they were only teenagers, and they spent the rest of their lives together.
In the late 80s, Juventino wanted to move closer to his parents, so he and Yolanda moved to Weslaco, where they raised their family. Yolanda felt the children needed her at home during their formative years, so she enjoyed many years of homemaking. Yolanda was a great cook. Mole, homemade tortillas, and chicken noodle soup were some of the family favorites. She also enjoyed crocheting and playing board games. Yolanda was also a disciplinarian and expected her children to adhere to strict rules. In addition, Yolanda taught her children to work hard and didn’t put up with slacking off.
Yolanda decided it was time to finish her education when the kids were old enough. She earned a GED and Bachelor’s degree in four years and joined the workforce. Yolanda worked for Weslaco East High School ten years and part-time as a substitute teacher after retiring.
Yolanda loved to spend time at the beach and fishing off the pier. She also played a friendly game of Loteria with friends and family.
Yolanda was extraordinarily generous and kind. She was also honest and not afraid to speak her mind, a trait that her children learned to appreciate.
Yolanda is preceded in death by her father, Higinio Pecina Sr., and grandchildren Elijah and Eliah Zamorano.
She is survived by her mother, Rebecca Pecina, her loving husband, Juventino Torres Jr., children, Jessica Torres, Eric Torres (Kristian Flores), and Rebecca Miranda Torres (Gerardo Zamorano), grandchildren, Kimberly, Leila, Emilio, and Eric Alexander Torres, siblings, Maria Minerva Pecina, Ramon Pecina, Higinio Pecina Jr., Luis Manuel Pecina (Maria), Norma Lucia Pecina, Maria de Jesus Pecina, Francisco Pecina (Sheila), Alma Patricia Gordon (Christopher), and Ruth Pecina, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 27th, 10 am-9 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 28th, at 10 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco, followed by burial at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes.
