Tips for Following the Proper Etiquette at Funeral Homes

December 10, 2018

Are you preparing to attend a service at a funeral home for the first time? Or has it simply been a while since you’ve made your way into a funeral home for a service? Either way, you should take the time to learn about the proper etiquette practices for people visiting  Alamo, TX funeral homes. It’ll prevent you from upsetting a grieving family and allow you to show respect to the deceased. Here are some helpful tips that will illustrate how to follow the proper etiquette at funeral homes.     Wear something that’s appropriate for a funeral home.   You might not be the type of person that likes to dress up on a regular basis. But when you’re attending funeral services in Alamo, TX, you should always put on something that’s appropriate for the occasion. For men, that usually means a black suit or, at the very least, a white shirt and tie with black slacks. For women, it usually means a dark-colored dress or pant suit. Steer clear of wearing anything that looks too fun or festive to a funeral.     Show up for services on time and be quiet from the moment you walk through the door.   If you’re scheduled to attend a funeral service at 11 a.m., try to arrive around 10:30 a.m. to give yourself plenty of time to park and get inside. Many times, funerals need to be delayed because people are still making their way into a funeral home at the scheduled start time. Make sure you don’t hold things up due to your lateness. Make sure you stay quiet as soon as you walk into a funeral home, too. You don’t want to disturb anyone who might be mourning the loss of a loved one.     Express your condolences to the grieving family before leaving.   Part of the reason people show up at funerals is to show their support for those families who are grieving. Your presence at a funeral often means the world to them. Show your support for a grieving family by approaching them at the appropriate time to express your condolences. Keep it short and say something like: “I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Your loved one was such a special person.” It’s a small gesture, but it will mean a lot to the family of the deceased.     Avoid taking pictures or doing anything else that might draw attention to you.   The idea of taking photos at funeral services was unheard of just 10 or 20 years ago. But today, smartphones have made it easy for people to snap photos. You might be tempted to try and capture a shot with a long-lost family member or a friend you haven’t seen in years at a funeral. But you should avoid doing it at all costs. It could be seen as disrespectful and could also distract others while calling attention to you. Wait until well after the funeral is over to take photos with friends and family if you choose to do it.     At McCaleb Funeral Home , we take funeral etiquette seriously, and we would be happy to answer any questions you might have about what is and isn’t allowed.
